When James Kalm moved from Idaho to New York in the late seventies, it was to study with Knox Martin at the Art Students League. In the thirty-something years since then, Martin has continued his industrious production of paintings. Never one to bow to fashion, this body of work is the culmination of over twenty years of work and, as Knox says, each picture has twenty to thirty paintings underneath. With a cult following among art aficionados Martin is truly a New York treasure, and the "Women: Black and White" pieces are gems of invention and painterly skill.

    Thank James

  • Have yet to formally study with him, but he once invited me to visit his master class at the ASL. I appreciated the experience. Gracious man whose work and ideas I've admired for many years. Thank you for posting this.

  • Thanks for allowing those of us unable to make the opening, a glimpse of Knox, his admirers and, most important, his provocative art. It's always a treat to see Knox, and an education to see his work. I'm so glad there were so many at the opening to celebrate him and his work.

  • Fabulous, James!

Knox is bigger than Cezanne, de Kooning, Picasso or Matisse. His invention has a "regime change" effect,-- making painting a whole new game,...

The others had the advantage of early fame in life. Knox is 88,-- almost a complete enigma.

James, attend to this man often, --since you will be awarded that special place in history as being the original videographer of Knox Martin in time. Google "Alpha Seer": His websites tell why Knox is so great, in very concrete terms.

  • @TheALPHASEER , This was not "inadvertent", I love Knox. I quote him at the beginning on my latest "Brooklyn Dispatches" article in the Brooklyn Rail, written two weeks ago, before I even knew this show was happening. Should be available by this week end, the October 2010 issue
