Immmature S. mansoni worms called schistosomula (sing. schistosomulum) that have been grown for 6 days in a cell culture medium containing red blood corpuscles (RBCs) - the little pink dots. The reddish-brown area in some of the worms indicates the position of the developing intestine and is due to the digestion of hemoglobin present in the RBCs upon which the worms feed. Note how flexible the worms are as they extend, contract and curl. These worms derive from the cercarial stage, shown in another video entitled 'larval Schistosoma parasite'.
