In a maglite there are about 17 or so connections and like the weakest link in a chain any one of them can cause resistance that causes dimming.

The D-Cell's switch can be completely disassembled which is a plus. Not so with the C-cell, unfortunately.

So I added a thick coat of Penetrox (aluminum joint compound) to the following:

tail spring to tail cap, set screw to sliding contact strip, set screw to flashlight body, and the threads for the tailcap and lens housing.

A thin coat to tailcap bright to maglite bright base connection, the front and back of each battery, the top of the tail spring, the bulb base spring caps and spring and to the threads of the bulb retaining ring.

An invisibly thin coat to the switch ring and ring-touching contacts, the cone-shaped spring cap to bulb base and the bulb-cylinder.

while I had the switch disassembled i used silicone lubricant on the plastic parts.

  • I have one where 2 of the 4 batteries leaked near the top causing corrision on the internal switch parts and the 2 batteries to become stuck i removed the screw and pounded and pounded nothing came out what do i do?

  • I would imagine that it would be possible to insert something on the top (light bulb side) of the tube to pound out the assembly through the bottom.

Disclaimer: If you choose to do so do it at own risk. There are hazards involved, including the chemicals inside the batteries.

  • What were u doing between 1:16 and 1:23? All I can see is your hand, some twisting and out popped the switch!

Mine couldn't seem to come out still.

  • An Allen wrench, I forgot what size -- maybe a 5/64".

  • Hey dude, I got a Maglite from a garage sale.

I can't open the freaking bottom part to get the batteries. It's tightly shut, any tips on how to open it ? I tried my wrench, but it's teeth were to big.

  • Brilliant video. I had been getting frustrated by my maglite 2D's poor performance. After watching your video I gave it a clean, and its working like new. Cosmetically, its battered and bruised, but works brilliantly. These things are tough.
