Endangered Black Males*
Dr. James Haney
"Endangered black males" is a term coined more than five years ago to describe African American males between 15 and 25 years old. The U.S. Wildlife Federation has three criteria to identify and place a species on the "endangered list, and subject to extinction." (1) the number of the species must be limited; (2) the predator must be identified, and (3) a remedy must be offered to
protect the species. "I think it is interesting that this country uses terms reserved for animals to refer to black males," says Dr. Raymond Winbush, psychologist and director of the Johnson Black Cultural Center at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.
"African Americans have been endangered in a number of ways since their arrival in the English North American colonies in 1619," but the present emphasis is on homicidal violence, drug abuse and their level of incarceration, he notes.
Homicide is the number one cause of death among black males 15-24. While this is an often quoted statistic, says Winbush, there is another side of the coin. The number one cause of death among white males 15-24 is automobile accidents. "I believe that the killings that take place among urban blacks is similar to the automobile killings that take place every Saturday night among white

  • Temeca Fisher History 2010-02 MWF 910am I feel like Mr.Simon gives a real feel for what being locked up in the prison system is like, he even goes into talking about the young guys who come forth and have no idea what their really up against while being incarcerated.

  • This interview proves that one's mind is strong enough to dictate one's situation. Simon was motivated to get out of jail and he did. If only this story could be shared with more inmates.

  • sharia howard mwf 8am 2010 to me this is a very good video. it give u a insight on what really goes on in prision, and how you have to adjust to life when you get out. it also tell you how people can change when they come out. this is very good for our young afric an american males talking that they are the majority of people who go to jail. our males need to really watch this video so that they can understand how important an education is

  • if there were only more people that had the same mind set as simon. society may not be in the shape it is in now. Kelly Jones HIST 2010-02

  • Ifeel that the justice center needs to stop stereotyping these young men because not all young men who wear baggy clothes and braids are criminals or "thugs." I feel that our young men need strong black men such as Simon to be mentors to them. I think many of our young men have a misconception that prison is like a badge of honor, that you are not a man unless you have done time. Diamond Wall HIST 2010-02
