Hurricane Irene hit New Bedford. See the Hurricane Dike in action. Outside view during the storm. Inside the harbor, even with the dike, there are boats getting damaged, and salvaged.

This is a group of short unedited clips showing some of the Hurricane Irene in New Bedford. These are taken duing the storm.

The video starts with a view of the Hurricane Dike. This giant structure blocks the ocean and shuts off the storm surge since the Army Core of Engineers closed it for the Irene.. There is video of salvage operations on one boat being pulled off the rocks, and video of a number of sunk and broken boats against the docks. Docks broke as one large sail boat ended up with it's stern right though the dock after it came loose off the mooring. You can see a few clips of boats sailing off on their own only to later be wrecked against the bridge being demasted as they went under. One runs over a channel marker.

The boats that got loose were all on the south side of the island, where they were subjected to some serious waves and wind. This wave action seemed to put a lot more up/down force on the front of the boats and the shorter mooring lines seemed to break the fronts off of a few of the boats that were wrecked. This was not the case on the north side where it was just wind.
One thing to note, most boats that left their sails on, had them shredded.

Max wind reported was in the 80's in this area. I think the sustained winds were in the 60's for a good part of the day.

  • De tweemaster is een Nederlands jacht, de Santa Maria, uit Volendam. op 3.58 minuten! Tegen de steiger. met dat uit zijn lijken geslagen zeil.

  • @Windval

Yes, that is the Santa Maria, from the Nederlands. She is now on a mooring in the harbor, but is in pretty bad shape from the outside. Is someone going to fix it up?

  • 0.o i live in the uk bedford and that looks bad

  • That was a Tropical Storm - please get your facts straight - Great footage by the way

  • Joost is waiting wat the insutance says. We all hope for a good outcome. He estimates that the total damage is about 100.000 € (136125,00 $).

For a nice picture of the Santa Maria in better day's, mail me pa3cum@gmail.com.

  • Looks like a mess at captain leroys from boats breaking loose from moorings.

The fixed docks held up much better than the floating ones. i'd also like to point out that the holes punched in boats on the floating docks were at ar near the waterline. Fixed docks much higher.
