Sleeves always have to be gathered so that the seam allowance will bend into the opening. It's a necessary part of making two pieces of fabric cut into different curves can be sewn together. So that's what I'm doing here.
No, Heidi, the new 'gathering' stitches are taking the place of those basting stitches. The basting stitches are only holding the dupioni silk and the underlining together. Since those two fabrics will be gathered as if they are one, the basting stitches are no longer necessary. I only removed the basting stitches to the pins that indicate where the gathering stitches are to stop and start. Had I left them in, the needle might have pierced the thread, and it would have been hard to remove.
