This is ingenious. I believe old Elton used to use one in the 70s/80s on his Steinways. Definitely what I'd invest in if I were playing an upright in a band. Still sounds better than any digital/sampled sound ever will.

It's a great product - worked in a night club in Houston and I used one. Also, Charlie Helpinsteel is just a wonderful guy. I recall that he came out and did some service on our piano, himself. I thought it was a great system - never understood why it didn't get more popular than it has....

You look a lot like Ezra Charles. I'm accusing you of having a duel identity man. Engineer by day, Boogie woogie man by night! We have a Helpinstill in the church's Steinway. "Charles Helpinstill" came over and installed it himself.
Now that I know who you really are, I'm going to check the Stienway for gas jets. I've seen your show.
interesting, but how does it sound? And why just get a monosignal and not a stereosignal?

It sounds like the piano it's on, no better, no worse. Our pickups are designed to amplify pianos, and amplification systems are usually mono. One really great, clean, feedback-free mono signal from the piano beats the heck out of two mics giving a "stereo" signal that's useless for amplification.
