I reviewed reports where damaged heart valves were able to be repaired by producing stem cells from the persons body and then injecting them into the blood stream. It seems that a numbe of those stem cells find their way to that damaged valve and attach to it. and cause it to begin repair. similarly this has been done on damage cartilage etc.
