Jim takes you to the piano to further investigate the solo of James P. Johnson, and bridge the ear training gap from the recording to the keyboard.

  • What I have most trouble with in takedowns is getting the fast bits and the left hand. I can hear the melody clearly and decipher that but when it comes to the left hand I have trouble hearing (on good recordings I can get the low notes but not always all the notes in the chord). Sometimes I can figure a little bit out from logic but I find myself quite often stuck.

Any suggestions for hearing a what seems like a blurry bass more clearly and for figuring fast runs?

    Thanks, love the videos.

  • As far as the "fast bits", try isolating small portions of the phrase or figure. Once you have identified it move on to another portion of the phrase-like a jigsaw puzzle.

A grasp of music theory/harmony is invaluable with any aspect of "take-downs".

Bass lines can be identified both by pitch and logic(does it sound like the 1,3,5,or 7 of the chord or is it a passing tone?).

Try to learn/analyze the basic tune first-it helps greatly with auditory identification.
