The song is thought by some to be attributed to Essex, the Queen's troublesome young courtier. The galliard version of the tune was published by Dowland with the dedication to Essex while she was still alive; the song with the words, which may point directly to the aging queen's subterfuges at maintaining her beauty,and her infertility, were not published until after she died.
