Thanks Scott. It is a technique called "key shifting". I basically set the flash output to about 1/125sec @ f/5.6 using my light meter. But the trick is to set your camera to manual mode, aperture stays at f/5.6 but start slowing the shutter speed down to let more ambient light into the shot. From memory the forest shots were taken with the shutter speed down around 1/30th sec; or two stops from "correct" exposure.
