By year 2000, tht Faroes had reached its peak under guidance of Allan Simonsen. Many players were professionals abroad, the team showed better quality of play than ever before or later and some good results came Faroese way those years.

In the first 2002 World cup qualifying game, Faroes fielded eight foreign based players, including three from the Danish top flight. Their opponents, Slovenia, were fresh from their appearances in the European championship finals in Holland and Belgium that summer, where they surprisingly qualified for. Slovenian team would also qualify for Japan and Korea in 2002.

In the first half, Faroese played well but were one goal behind at the break.
