Does Islam oppress women? This is a common belief held by many non-muslims in the West but can this actually be substantiated with clear proofs? This belief has lead to the hijab being detested and held in disdain to the point where many would like a piece of cloth to be banned, inventing all sorts of lame excuses to justify themselves.

This is an illuminating and elucidating lecture on the freedom of women through Islam, delivered by Abu Khadeejah.

You may ask why only a minority of muslim women cover themselves up and wear the hijab. Well this may be for several reasons such as their ignorance of the command to wear the veil or the wisdom behind it, being westernised or 'bollywoodinised'.

However, Muslim women are commanded in the Qur'aan to cover themselves up:

"And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts) and not to show off their adornment except only that which is apparent (like both eyes for necessity to see the way or outer dress like veil, gloves, head-cover, apron, etc.), and to draw their veils all over Juyubihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms,) and not to reveal their adornment except to their husbands, or their fathers, or their husband's fathers, or their sons, or their husband's sons, or their brothers or their brother's sons, or their sister's sons, or their (Muslim) women (i.e. their sisters in Islâm), or the (female) slaves whom their right hands possess, or old male servants who lack vigour, or small children who have no sense of the feminine sex. And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornment. And all of you beg Allâh to forgive you all, O believers, that you may be successful." [Surah 24 - Al-Noor : Verse 31]

One needs to understand the status of women before the advent of Islam and the Prophet Muhammad to gain a complete picture of the freedoms granted to women through Islam.

The pre-Islamic Pagan Arabs used to practice the heinous act of burying their female children alive (see Quran 16:58-59). Women during these times were also treated as slaves, they could not own any property and weren't allowed to inherit.

Pre-Islam Arabs had no limited number of wives. They could marry two sisters at the same time, or even the wives of their fathers if divorced or widowed (see Quran 4:22-23). Prostitution and indecency were also widespread. Islam put a stop to this.

With regards to women in the west, then it is the Western ideology that treats and encourages women to be objects of sexual desire to the point where the adult entertainment industry is very big business, generating billions of profit each year, something you won't see in the muslim lands.

It's very clever how some men in the West developed the notion of freedom and liberation for women under the guise of wearing as little as possible to satisfy their lusts and vain desires. Women are mentally enslaved as they are compelled to wear the latest fashion, taught to resemble waifs in magazines, put on tons of makeup and undergo cosmetic surgery, spending so much money in the process.

Why should this be the case? Why should the western woman be oppressed in this way, even though she may not realise it deep down?

When a muslim women covers herself in the hijab, she is making a statement that now that I've covered those things which you (men) may find attractive, you must judge me for my mind and not by body, and the doors leading to evil are closed.

Contemplate upon this and the everyday events in your life and on television, and you'll realise the wisdom behind the veil.
