(All copy rights are for PBS.) Catherine II , also known as Catherine the Great.She reigned as Empress of Russia from 9 July 1762 after the assassination of her husband, Peter III. Under her direct auspices the Russian Empire expanded, improved its administration, and continued to modernize along Western European lines. Catherine's rule re-vitalized Russia, which grew stronger than ever and became recognized as one of the great powers of Europe.

  • i always fascinated with Catherine the Great because of her minions.. she did has many cute and handsome minions since her husband death.. ;)

  • After reading her story in the royal diaries, it surprised me how much this documentary was like the little movie running in my head as i read the book

  • Excellent documentary, but Catherine looked prettier in her pictures than this particular actress, especially in her earler years. I'm being vain huh?

  • @Superbonnuit It has to do with the Empress Elizabeth's deep affection for Catherine's deceased maternal uncle who was betrothed to the then Princess Elizabeth. The uncle died before the marriage took place, but Elizabeth harbored deep love for him her entire life. Some of the love transferred to Catherine's family. Plus Catherine, while poor by nobility's standard, was extraordinarily well connected blood-wise. A noble can be dirt poor, but her blood connection is priceless.
