Fall '82, along with Grover Washington's The Best Is Yet to Come and Shakatak's Night Birds, this tune played heavily on R&B radio into the next year, then dropped off the face of the earth. Had no idea who even made it, and no way to find out until a search on discogs.com for what I figured was the title turned up this group that had a single with this title from that year. Search for it here on YouTube, and find herecomesmongo's video of Tender Touch. Starts off sounding like a different genre, but then it becomes obvious that the voice and production style are the same, and that the latter was probably a followup to Holding On. I don't think I ever heard Tender Touch, (And had never even heard of the group name) but Holding On was so memorable, with the jazzy piano solos. It was also the earliest song I know of to ever use the digital electric piano, which really took off and transformed pop music in '84-5. (that's the instrument that plays the 6 notes ending every four measures. It sounds a bit like a vibraphone, which is used at the beginning and in a solo later in the song).
This should never have been forgotten like this.

  • Good song, but the similarities with Bobby Caldwell's "What You Won't Do For Love" bother me a little...

  • Yeah, the bass line is very similar. But the harmony (chords, scale) are totally different.

  • my name is dave collins

  • That you on the vocals?

  • Thanks for writing back. Please hurry and put the instrumental on. Kind off a funky Jazz groove. You'll like it

  • OK; I did, right after responding to you. It's the "response" to this video! Can't wait until someone recognizes it and says what it is!

  • I am sorry to hear such bad sound quality on You Tube of this track. I picked this 12 inch up from a NYC record store sometime in the 80's. When I have time I will upload mine straight from the groove. I do love this song though. Funky Jazz. in the same mood as Bill Withers and Tom Browne and Grover Washington.

  • I used to DJ at a spot in Miami and I would spin this at the beginning and the end of my night. The keyboards were crisp and tight. The memories are floodin' back to me ...... this was some HOT sound - way before it's time, other DJ's in my record pool weren't even spinning it. Lemme get my usual Bombay and Tonic w/ a twist o' lime and grove to this here..................................Peace!

  • HOT. Classic joint. Great vibes solo.

Man I would LOVE to find a clean copy of this one !
