At the end of August 2010 our beautiful boy fell ill. He was very poorly and for a week and a half there was no improvement. We felt completely helpless and it was so upsetting to see our little guy, who is normally so full of life, look so sad and in such pain. But he is a fighter, and during the darkest moments, the light of our love shone on him to let him know there was hope, and that we would never give up on him, even though our hearts were breaking.

On Friday the 10th of September into Saturday the 11th September, Ben was put under general anaesthetic for an MRI scan and a spinal fluid extraction. This was so the vet could determine if he was suffering from canine menigitis. When he came round he was put on medication to treat it and we heard that he was improving. It is now Saturday 11th and today he went into the vets garden and has been running around and playing a little. When we left him at the dog hospital, he could barely walk.

We knew when we met Ben he was a very special little puppy. I bought the video camera to capture the many special moments we would have with him as he became a part of the family and a part of our lives. This video is a tribute to the first 11 months of his life, and my own way of reaching out to him in his hour of need and to try to understand and make sense of what he was going through. Even though he is still recovering and has yet to come home, he knows how much we love him and I am sure he will be back with us very soon.

The video includes still pictures of Ben whilst sick, and of course, video of when well and happy. We have learned first hand what a horrible illness canine meningitis is and I hope this video might help others to learn and hopefully prevent other dogs from suffering unnecessarily. If your dog suddenly falls ill, walks with a stoop, cannot bend his neck properly and has to lie down or lies to one side, he could very well have this awful disease. Don't be afraid to ask your vet to check for symptoms. This is a very serious illness, and if left unchecked can cause paralysis and blindness, and if left for a few weeks, even death.

I would like to thank all our friends and family for praying for our special little boy. It looks as though God listened to all those prayers and good wishes and his wings are now healing. We really hope you all enjoy our video.

  • would you mind if i ask how much is a baby beagle?

  • @carloh011 They are quite expensive. You should be looking to pay anywhere between £550 and £850.

  • is you dog better now hes so cute i sure hope he is

  • @XDivineSouljax He's great thanks! :)

  • What a lovely dog hope he makes a full recovery. What type of meningtis has he got??

My dog was diagnosed with Meningitis back in May 2010. He made a 95% recovery. One thing I found that out no one know that dogs can get Meningitis. There should be more awareness out there. In way so more pet owners, would know how to look for signs of meningitis.

Sadly we lost our dog last week but not to meningitis. He got Pneumonia as his immune system never fully recovered.

  • @suzamieblue1 Thanks for your reply. He had the viral. He made a full recovery. So sorry to hear of your loss. And yes, there should be more awareness of this disease. We have met at least two other dog owners whose pets have suffered from it.

  • beautiful dog! i had just made my first video of my silly beagle, Snoopy haha what a rascal he is. is yours okay????

  • Hello!

I have a beagle who arrived in a sad moment of my life. I lost my beloved father (January 2011), and (June 2011) My beagle has arrived. Before him I was crying every night and could not sleep. Currently it is my joy, my life is happy, is a four-legged angel. I wept with emotion watching your video. I hope that soon your angel is recovered and back to bring much joy to you. Thanks for posting this handsome video

    Regards,

  • What a beautiful video. Beagles are such wonderful dogs. I'm so glad to see he recovered completely! Enjoy your many happy years to come together.

  • Oh my, your beagle reminded me of my own beagle (whose name is Abby). I'm so sorry to hear about your loss :(

  • @jinsu64 Thanks for your kind thoughts!

  • @BeagleBoyOlli Thanks. Just to let you know, Ben is now 100% better and will live a full and happy life. With canine meningitis my understanding is it doesn't come back once they've recovered.

  • I can;t imagine what you are going through. We thought it was bad cos our wee puppy was eating up the flooring and trashing his bed.... How awful for you. Love and positive vibes from 11 month old beagle and owners xxx
