David Beckham trains with Arsenal but Wenger rules out transfer
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has ruled out signing David Beckham after allowing the former England captain to train with his team.
Beckham, 37, is without a club after leaving Los Angeles Galaxy at the end of the Major League Soccer season.
Wenger said the former Manchester United midfielder phoned to ask if he could train with Arsenal to keep fit.
"There's no speculation about signing or anything," Wenger said when asked if he might sign Beckham.
"He has not done anything for a long, long time. He has asked to come here and to work on his fitness."
Beckham has not played since the beginning of December when he helped LA Galaxy retain the MLS Cup with a 3-1 win over Houston Dynamo.
He was linked with moves to Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco, but insisted after the match that he had "no idea" where he would be playing next.
Beckham won 115 England caps, his final appearance coming against Belarus in a World Cup qualifier in October 2009.
David Beckham will begin training with the north London club this week, while Arsenal's top negotiator has flown to Spain to try and work a deal for Barcelona striker David Villa.

There is no suggestion Beckham will do anything more than just train with the first team at London Colney, and in any case a 37 year-old is unlikely to help their cause ahead of a Champions League tie with Bayern Munich.

A deal for Villa, meanwhile, seems like a long-shot and it will take all of Wenger's cunning to complete a move before the window closes late on Thursday night.

Becks joins Arsenal
David Beckham will join Arsenal today in a short-term deal that will see him train with the first-team squad at the Gunners' Hertfordshire training HQ, the Sun claims. Beckham, 37, is desperate for one last challenge at the top level and will train with the north London club in a bid to prove his fitness to potential suitors. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger approved the top-secret plan because he admires Beckham's outstanding professional attitude and the influence he will have on younger squad members. Beckham is a free agent and has been linked with moves to Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan.

Arsenal hold Villa talks
Arsenal have begun formal discussions with Barcelona over the signing of striker David Villa, Goal.com reports. The Gunners' contract negotiator Dicky Law is in Spain to work out a transfer for the unsettled forward and Arsenal are increasingly hopeful they can get a deal done before the window closes on Thursday night. They believe the Liga leaders are coming round to the idea of selling Villa, who is "very keen" to join Arsenal, according to sources. The Gunners are willing to pay £13.8 million and match his current £110,000-a-week wages.

Harry swoops for Crouch
Queens Park Rangers Harry Redknapp is attempting to sign Peter Crouch for the third time in his managerial career in a proposed swap deal with Jamie Mackie, according to the Times. Crouch rose to prominence at QPR as a youngster and is thought to be interested in a return to London, although Mackie is said to be less keen on a move north. Norwich's interest in Mackie and Swansea's pursuit of Crouch's fellow Stoke striker Kenwyne Jones could yet derail Redknapp's planned transfer.

Spurs in late £20m bid for Damiao
Tottenham will make a late £20m bid for Brazil striker Leandro Damiao, the Daily Star claims. Spurs are in dire need of a goalscoring centre-forward and are ready to make an offer Damiao's club Internacional will find difficult to refuse. The White Hart Lane side will offer up goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes plus cash to try and persuade them to do a deal for the London 2012 Olympics top-scorer.

Negredo on Spurs wish-list
Tottenham will make a move for striker Alvaro Negredo if a deal for Leandro Damiao falls apart as they seek to bolster their attacking options, Mail Online reports. Negredo would be available for around £15m although Sevilla's dire financial situation means they accept a compromise deal after Spurs reignited their interest in the Spaniard.

Juve ready to hijack Balo bid
Juventus are ready to hijack AC Milan's move for Manchester City bad boy Mario Balotelli, according to the Sun. Milan were confident of sealing a £17m move for the Etihad misfit but Juventus have now emerged as a strong contender for his signature, with more talks between the clubs to take place today. Either way it looks as if Balotelli has played his last game for City and one way or another will complete a move to Italy before the window closes on Thursday.

Norwich striker merry-go-round
Grant Holt will be allowed to leave Norwich is manager Chris Hughton can sign either Celtic's Gary Hooper or Ricky van Wolfswinkel of Sporting Lisbon, the Guardian claims. Sunderland and Celtic are said to retain an interest in Holt, while Villa boss Paul Lambert may turn to Holt if he can offload Darren Bent.
