Mckamey's, on the outside, appears to be a well maintaned facility. With it's nice quadrangle building and yard. When one surveys the scene he/she may think "This looks like a place that loves animals and will do their best to make sure the animal that are in their care find the best homes."
Dolefully the presupposition one could make is not the right one.
From an encounter I have had with "McKamey Animal Care & Adoption Center" I found that Mckamey is more intrested in closing on an adoption then they are in the proper placement of the heartrendering animals in thier care.
Recently I was in search of a new companion. Wanting to "do the right thing" and rescue a dog instead of buying one from a breeder, I went to Mckamey's. There I found the cutest Shar Pei mixed dog. They had named the dog "July". Oh, how my heart just gave to July when I saw her.
I imediatly went to the kiosk and inquired about July. I was informed...
'July was brought to us by a breeder who bred Shar Pei. A lab happened to get ahold of one of the breeder's females. So July is half Shar Pei and half Lab. The reason she was brought in is because she had an allergic reaction to flea treatment and the breeded could not afford to treat her'
I asked if that was it and was told yes. So I adopted her. I renamed her Onyx.
A few weeks later I brought Onyx back to Mckamey's to have her fixed, microchipped, and a well vet check up. That is when I found out
---- I was the 4th person to adopt Onyx
---- Onyx was surrendered to McKamey's because she had a form of mange that would be with her the rest of her life due to her abnormal immune system
---- Onyx , who I was told was 2 months old, was 6 months old.
---- is not a Shar Pei/ Lab mix nor did she come from a breeder. She is a Rott/Bulldog/random other dog mix
At the time I found out all of this information, I let Mckamey know that I could not afford (Emotionaly and finatualy) to take Onyx to the vet twice a month for the rest of her life (as I was told by the vet that I would have to do). And that I was not ready for that kind of responsibility. I politley asked them for my money back. That is when they got another vet on the phone. We all confrenced and they had the other vet tell me. "She will not have mange her whole life. Just give her Heartguard+ daily for 6 weeks and she should be fine"
I thought to myself "since a vet said she should be fine... she should be fine" So I took Onyx home and loved her. I gave Onyx a chewable Heartguard+ tablet every morning (not cheap at all and you have to get it from a vet) like I was told. I kept taking her in every six weeks for a skin scraping to see if she still had mange. Each time they found more and more "active mites".
Then the vet increased the amount I was to give her. I now had to purchess Ivermec from them as well. I was then giving Onyx one Heartguard+ in the morning and 0.75ml of Ivermec at night.
This almost killed my dog. I went to get Onyx from her crate one morning and she could not move. She was waving back and forth, foaming at the mouth, and was blind. She had Ivermec poisoning. I called animal poison control and that is what I was informed. There was nothing that could be done because it had been too long since the last dose was given. I just had to wait and watch. For the longest time I had to nurse her. Poor thing could barely breathe.
Now Onyx has her site back and is moving around. Mckamey's refuses to help with any of the vet bills and will not refund or exchange. As I told them clearly in the beginning... I am not emotionally ready for a ill dog nor can I afford the treatment.
So now I know....
McKamey's only care about how they look on paper, but in no way do they care about pets or pet parents.
