This is a screen capture of a guitar tab I'm working on for an arrangement I did of Ronald Jenkee's "Messin with a guitar sound". The software is Notion's "Progression" and when it comes to making tabs, this program is tops. Even as a total novice with this software I was able to come up with this in just a couple of hours, it's that easy to use!

The great thing about Progression is that you can input the notes by playing them in real time via a MIDI guitar. Set the tempo, hit record, start playing and the software automatically assigns the notes rhythmic values and inputs the tab. You can also input the notes one at a time by using the keyboard or importing a MIDI file. Granted you may have to brush up on your standard notation skills (which I obviously need to do LOL!), this brings tabbing out a song for guitar to a whole new level.

Another awesome feature of Progression is the quality of the samples used for playback. I originally recorded this particular song on an acoustic. After auditioning a few of the distorted guitar sounds, however, I found that they sounded really, really good (well at least for this type of software anyway....). So although the tab reflects the version I did on acoustic, I wanted you guys to hear what it sounds like with a tone that more closely resembled RJ's original vid. Please note the original song is tuned down half-step so if you want to match the pitch you will need to tune your guitar down to Eb.

You can download the guitar tab here:

If you have trouble downloading just send me a message and I'll email it too you.

This music was used with permission of the owner, so if you talk to RJ, please thank him for so generously allowing his music to be shared. Oh and if you haven't already, go to his site and buy his album, best $10 I spent this year!

Now you guys have some tabs to go off of, let's hear some comments and see some video responses. Enjoy!

  • this appears to just be guitar pro with better sounding instruments...i have not done any research so correct me if i'm sorely mistaken

  • Actually you are pretty much right, I have played with GP but its tracking via a MIDI guitar was no where near as good as Prog. Not only that, but as you said the samples are much better. I think its a step up from GP but I do miss some of the other features of GP...

  • Totally cool! What kind of MIDI guitar are you using? Can this be done with an acoustic steelstring guitar? Thanks for the vid! -Derek

  • Thanks! I use a MIDI equipped Fender Strat into a Roland GI-20. You can do this with an acoustic. I believe Godin makes a steel string that has the MIDI pickup built-in although from what I remember it is more of a hybrid than a trad. steel string guitar. Otherwise you would have to get a GK3 pickup and stick it on your guitar. Either way, it is doable.
