ANCHOR:
Clashes raged overnight in Lebanon's second city, Tripoli, where fierce fighting between gunmen for and against the government took place. Hezbollah says it will continue a programme of civil disobedience in the capital.

STORY:
Calm returns to the streets of Beirut after days of fighting as the army takes over security control.

But Hezbollah supporters keep road blocks on key thoroughfares.

Lebanese troops patrolled the capital after Hezbollah fighters pulled back from areas they had seized in deadly gun battles with supporters of the U.S. backed government.

Hezbollah, a political group backed by Iran and Syria, said it was ending its armed presence in Beirut after the army overturned government measures against the group.

One man sitting outside his closed shop said he was ashamed of the situation.

[Jaber Mohamed, Beirut Resident]:

''We have the most glorious country, we don't have (sectarian) discrimination here. They are planting it. What's this Sunni and Shiite and Druze and Christian about? This is forbidden in religion. All faiths should be respected. What is happening is shameful.''

While calm was restored in Beirut clashes raged overnight in Lebanon's second largest city, Tripoli.

Security sources say there has been an unspecified number of casualties during gunfights between pro and anti government supporters.

Lebanon has been in political deadlock for 18 months over opposition demands for a greater say in government.

Four days of fighting in the country has killed at least 39 people. It is the worst internal violence since Lebanon's 15-year civil war.

  • @BloodxGusher religion is one of the reasons yes. Truth is just like most civil conflicts, there is interest to create reasons to fight to make money and influence power. Religion is a convienient scapegoat. I gurantee Hasan Nasrallah has made quite the penny out of this type of thing. I doubt the likes of Saad Hariri and Michel Suleiman know what its like to have to eat bread for there only diet either. The older gentleman is completely correct, not just about Lebanon but the whole world
