Yes he did! A much slower song than the Carpenters more midtempo cover version. Chamberlin's original should be here on You Tube as well. If you find it, listen to it

This song may be best remembered by the Carpenters and Matt Monro here does a great version here, but the song dates back to 1963, when it was first recorded by Richard Chamberlin(yes, the actor).
