Halle Berry has overcome many obstacles to become one of Hollywoods A-list celebrities. She uses her past experiences as a motivator to help others going through the same hardships.

While filming the TV series Living Dolls in 1989, Halle Berry collapsed into a coma. At 24, doctors diagnosed her with type 1 diabetes . Since her diagnosis, she has been outspoken about her disease and assists people in understanding the implications of the disease.

She joined the campaign Diabetes Aware as the first celebrity spokesperson. She is involved with the campaign to help spread the world to the nearly 5 million people who are currently living with undiagnosed diabetes. Berry appears on the homepage of the website wit a special message to visitors stating the importance of understanding and treating the disease. The Diabetes Aware campaign helps people understand the importance of detection, monitoring, and proper management of the disease.

Berry is also a national advocate for domestic violence awareness. She is well aware of the damaging implications of domestic violence.

"I grew up in an abusive family. I saw firsthand the destruction that abuse can do, especially to children," says Halle Berry. "I've always cared about women and women's issues."

Since 1999, Berry has supported and fund-raised for the Jenesse Center. The center provides support for abused women through its domestic violence intervention program. The center was founded in 1980 by five women who themselves survived domestic violence. The center provides a shelter for women and teaches them self-sufficiency.

Berry is actively involved with the center by working one-on-one with many of the women who come to the shelter.
"I would clean them up, get them clothes and get them situated for their first night there. Sometimes I counsel them. They look at me as if I have all the answers," says Berry. "But I'm not a therapist. I just try to be an ear, be a friend, someone who they can talk to, confide in."

  • she doesn't publicize her well doings? then why did she go on the news? quite hypocritical..

  • @gphx I know, Gotta love her :D

  • @Chantayful Great point! Stress has been shown to wreck havoc with blood glucose levels. I can't imagine what hell it must be to be a star. Halle is such a class act.

  • @gphx couldn't stress be one ??? cause of paparazzi and things ??

  • @x40sublime Recent research has shown many genetic factors making people susceptible to Type 2. Obesity, high blood pressure, and other former 'risk factors' may in fact be complications of insulin resistance and diabetes.

  • she was diagnosed with type 2?? i have type 1 wich is insulin dependant. i thought type 2 came from people with high cholesterol and high blood pressure, and mainly overweight people...weird. this whole time i thought she was type 1! lol a diabetic is a diabetic im jus sayin ..
