I don't know the true reasons why the Ghost appeared.
In fact I play the german Version, She says something like
"It was Hamlet's wish to save these people, sometimes a little pig can save many people. You have to travell further to save the World from the Comet.
Maybe it is a symbol. The pig dies and the ghost appeared to explain, what your quest is, and that sometimes the dead of one can save the live of a dozen or hundreds. But I am not sure
