Norman Kunc was born with cerebral palsy, Although the doctors recommended that he be institutionalized, Norman's parents ignored their advice and took him home. Norman has received a Masters of Science in Family Therapy and become a well-known disability rights advocate, yet he has always been haunted by what his life might have been like had his parents followed the doctors' advice. In a collage of powerful images set to poignant music, Norman Kunc expresses the terror of almost having been incarcerated for life.

My rather famous x-mom-in-law institutionalized her son because she couldn't deal with CP and retardism. He is still there to this day. Now that she has a great grandson with CP, she can't bear to look at him. Is it repulsion or guilt? Who cares. He's MY grandson and we all love this little guy to infinity and beyond! At 3 1/2 yrs. old, he is excelling rapidly...due to the overwhelming love, attention and therapy he is getting. Special needs doesn't mean disposable. Bless us all for loving them.
How wonderful your parents are to have seen that your life had value and took you home to love you and nurture you. Obviously you continue on the love with your own family. I too am glad I took my daughter home and loved her for as long as heaven above allowed her to be on this earth.
Institutions exist to meet community folk's needs to get the severly disabled out of sight of the community.Conditions seen here exist as "out of sight, out of mind" rules. Most public hospitals are poorly funded, understaffed and doing the best they can with what they have. There are programs that support persons in the community before and after committment, making hospitals obsolete. Tax payers revolt vs increases to fund them.Community support...$X a full quality of life.....priceless.
Brain dead means that the person is practically dead. Cannot think, see, hear or do anything at all. Brain dead is when your not even aware you're living.
