I really dont understand how people could possibly survive wiping out at Teaupoo or Shipstern Bluff. Both have waves that weigh as much at 15 Empire State Buildings and Razor Sharp Coral reefs less then 5 feet below the surface of the water. How do they survive? Someone please help me understand

Teahupoo is insane. There's no competition. It's like Pipeline overdosed on steroids flying into a roid rage.

Not all of that weight is coming down on the surfer's head. Shit like "they way as much as 15 Empire State buildings" etc. is just mathematical bollocks. Maybe if you took the WHOLE wave, yeah!! Also, that 5 feet of water provides a pretty major cushion and, in the majority of cases here, the surfer is going over the falls, meaning that there's even more water between him and the reef. Having said all that, I wouldn't fancy it and these guys can hold their breath for a while!!
