In 1966, Hasbro (Hassenfeld Brothers) introduced the G.I. Joe Mercury Space Capsule. This was a very nice replica of the spacecraft the first american astronauts flew into space. The toy also came with a 45 RPM vinyl record titled: "Introduction to Manned Mercury Spaceflight" (Side 1) and "Actual Mercury Spaceflight Communications" (Side 2).

The audio portion of this video is Side 1 of that record. The pictures used are all from the Mercury Space Program, featuring the seven original American astronauts; Alan Shepard, Virgil Grissom, John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, Walter Schirra, Donald (Deke) Slayton. These pictures were all taken from the NASA website (where you can see many more pictures like these)and are used in accordance with their guidelines.

  • As a patriotic American, and an avid GIJoe fan, I'd love to say that I enjoyed this video...however, at the 3:05 minute mark, there is a picture of 7 ragheads thrown in. What the hell are THEY doing in there?!?!?! That one picture BLEW the whole thing. Way to screw it all up!

  • Those 'ragheads' are the 7 Mercury astronauts after survival training. It certainly is a much different sort of picture than we usually see of these heroic men.

  • Thank you for posting. This brings back memories. I too was hoping to hear the other side with the actual astronaut chatter. The photo around 3:05 threw me too. lol

  • @maceek1 Yes he is. Al Shepard's is in the center of the photo.

  • @gijoefan67

I don't call that a "patriotic American", I call that having a stick up your ass

  • @gijoefan67 It appears the Doctor is not the only dimbulb here!

  • @gijoefan67

    Whoa, easy there! lol!

You can definitely recognize Gus Grissom (3rd from right). I think Glenn is 3rd from left?

  • Wow, this is soooooo cool ! Thanks a lot for posting this. I love Gi Joe. I still collect them today as an adult. No doubt, Gi Joe was the best toy to come out for a boy, ever i think. A sure winner for Hasbro indeed. Thanks again. Bob-------

  • I have this record! Only mine is Yellow Vinyl. The second side has "Actual Mercury Spaceflight Communications".

  • My older brother and I would play this at 78RPMs and roll on the floor laughing. I really wanted to hear the other side though.

  • I can understand your reaction. I believe that particular photo was first published in Life magazine in a spread on the astronauts before any had actually flown.
