Here from 1929, is a recording oddity. Just who are the Dixie Devils ? Could it be King Oliver, late in his career ? In any event, it is a wonderful late twenties Jazz Selection that should be enjoyed by all.

  • Wonderful! You do not come across the VanDyke label very often! Sounds magical!

  • @sideshowtink Thanks, VanDyke's were produced for only a very short time period in 1929, but if you get lucky, there is some really rare, hard to find, jazz and other sides of interest, by well known artists. There is alot of Grey Gull House band stuff as well, but if you do your detective work thoroughly, you can find some truly exceptional cuts among the common stuff. Also see my Victrolaman "The Terror" entry by Cliff Jackson and his Crazy Kats. Really rare and exceptional.

  • Thanks for watching, evidently there are not many folks who are interested or curious about tuning in and hearing this very rare jazz entry. Thanks again,

  • Really wonderful piece of music.Nice find!

  • Nice tune, great soloists!

  • Awesome recording!! That Van Dyke looks perfect!

    Super!!!

  • Some of the lyrics are:

    In Harlem's Araby

They drink booze like it was tea

Oh you never seen such awful sights

    As Harlem's Araby.

  • as per mmay - mosiello and sanella probably although mannie seems to be on some van dykes - wonderful sound on your your credenza

  • Thanks for posting this video! This jazz fan loves it!!!

I think I read that Andy Sanella had been questioned about this side, and he said it was he on clarinet and alto, and Mike Mosiello on trumpet. I think Mosiello must have been like Manny Klein, able to mimic the styles of other artists very easily.

Beautiful music, and your copy is in very nice condition. Thanks again for posting!

  • sounds great! love them old victrolas

  • I think I have one Van Dyke 78. This one is very nice..

  • This is amazing! Such a sound! I have a couple of the Van Dyke records, but they don't sound like that! Even on my Orthophonic machine! Thanks for sharing this gem!
