One of the most scrutinized offshoots of the global campaigns in defense of human rights has been the promotion of political rights—and specifically the promotion of democracy. But now, with the world's most vocal proponent of democracy mired in a failed venture in the Middle East, is democracy promotion still a viable objective of U.S. foreign policy? And is it a cause still worth being championed by the international community—and with what effectiveness? Leading-off with Morton Halperin, Heraldo Muñoz, and Khaled Dawoud, The Century Foundation and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung brought together key policy practitioners to answer these questions at a United Nations roundtable discussion on 4 June 2008.
