a less well-known recording of Carter's great Double Concerto, by the English Chamber Orchestra, Paul Jacobs (harpsichord) and Charles Rosen (piano), under the direction of Frederik Prausnitz. it's obviously not quite as refined as others, but it's also one of the first (the LP was released in 1968). for the best performance check out the one uploaded by GreggaryPeccary.
I think they are just tuning up. And they aren't very good at that.
Actually, I have heard this piece in the 70's, at the Whitney Museum. Mr. Carter was there. He is a great composer, but I must confess, most of his music is beyond my comprehension. Listen to the early quartets, repeatedly, and you will realize this man can compose.

This is great! It's like a soundrack to a Vincent Price movie.

A friend wants me to learn to appreciate Carter and other non-melodious composers. I am still working hard not to retch. I hate it
