Naturally Me Many women of African decent throughout America, and the rest of the world struggle with this idea that Black is ugly; anything that makes us look to close to our original ancestors in some way makes us believe that we are inferior. Growing up I shared the same feelings of inferiority because of my completion and mainly course hair texture. I felt ugly and out of place all during my childhood, and begged my mother to chemically relax my hair, so that I could now be pretty like the other girls. A relaxcer is never a one-time thing it must be applied every 2-3 months where you experience the same lye burning experience to your scalp followed by scabs. But this sacrifice seemed worth every bit of pain for the beautiful outcome to me at the time. When I entered college having various discussions with women my age as well as my younger sister, I began to contemplate going natural. Removing all of the harsh chemicals from my hair and letting it grow out, this ran though my head for two years. The images in the media are what I believed to be beautiful and to move away from that was extremely hard. During the summer of 2008 my sister and I decided to do the big chop and cut everything off. I realized that my beauty, which encompasses both internal and external factors, isn't dependent on my hair alone. I am growing to truly love me as a person and everything else I hope will fall into place. It amazing that we are born natural yet it becomes a traumatizing situation when we do perm and want to go back to being natural. We are basically saying that we are ashamed to be who we are. Society has programmed us for so long to think that the lighter and straighter is better, but better for whom?

  • I wish chris rock would made a documentary like this instead of his Good Hair movie. No desrespect to his film but still when I saw Good Hair, all that came to be was when his daughter ask how come she doesn't have good hair, he really didn't took it to another level with his answer. It's was all relaxers, weaves, were it came from, reaction from Hollywood, the end. No where did he explain about natural hair or the history of natural hair. I prefer this doc instead. Five stars love!*****

  • @Happym3 I hear yah buddy! I never trust Propecia and as I tried the hair loss treatment suggested at the site HairLoss101. net (remove the space). Never seen such good results in such a small amount of time. Im pretty eager to know the results on your wife, so keep us updated!.:)

  • what an inspirational video!

  • Wow. I feel the exact same way. You're BEAUTIFUL (:

  • Love this video! Almost made me tear up! :) lol...I went natural and back to relaxers twice, I am now almost one year into being natural again. I appreciate and Love my hair so much more this time around! So true about the media, and how we need to love ourselves for who we are naturally! We lost our culture in slavery, so you are right...our hair is our closest connection to our ancestors! Thanks for sharing!

  • Love the video and thanx for sharing. Peace

  • I absolutely loved this video... Ive been natural for about 3 years and I actually cut my hair in 2006 then let it grow out and then went back to relaxers... Then I deiced to go back natural in 2008. But you are beautiful girl natural or relaxed.. Its so true that we are victims to the media... The media tells us what is beautiful and natural kinky hair is not looked at as beautiful to most people!!! But I think were getting there... We gotta keep being BOLD and standing out for what we believe!

  • One of the best natural hair videos out there on You Tube. You said everything I feel and have felt very honestly, candidly, and that's what's up! Thank you sister for sharing your experience....for it is the plight of some many of us!

  • Thank you so much for sharing, so of us african women need to see or hear others perspective...and I CAN sooo relate;-).

  • Girl, you are absolutely GORGEOUS!
