As far as I remember US backed Saddam when he decicded to invade Iran and turned a blind eye when he used chemical warfare.They then shot down an Iranian airbus which was on route to Dubai I think with over 270 passengers. They then use drug money from South America to pacify the Iranians.
Afghanistan was doing reasonably well having regained its independance from Britain early 20th century until the US decided to stick it's mucky hands in 1979 funding the Mujahadeen ..........etc,etc
