U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon came to his motherland on Sunday the 9th, as an unofficial visit and bi-annual holiday. This is his second visit to South Korea since he became the U.N. Secretary General in January 2007. On the 10th, Ban attended the opening ceremony of the 39th Plenary Assembly of the World Federation of United Nations Associations, calling for "a renewed multilateralism." In his opening remarks, Ban said the world faces crises of food, fuel, flu, and finance, and they are compounded by other great challenges of climate change and deadly weapons. [Ban Ki-Moon, U.N. Secretary General]: "Like never before, our modern world is a world of interconnections. Like never before, we must therefore act together." Ban says the world needs to set four cornerstones: climate change, peace and security, development, and human rights. [Ban Ki-Moon, U.N. Secretary General]: "We accept today that the international community has a moral and pragmatic duty to step in to help when governments cannot, or will not, protect their people." On this visit, Ban will participate in the Global Environment Forum on the 11th and in the Jeju Peace Forum on the 13th. On the 18th, he will meet Korean President Lee Myung Bak and share ideas on North Korean nuclear issues. NTD, Seoul, South Korea.
