Dog Food for Allergies

Ever thought about using a homemade dog food recipe.....you might after reading this!

There are several ailments that can affect your dog the same as they can affect you. Even dogs are prone to allergic reactions from the food they ingest. These allergic reactions can be caused by numerous factors, such as pathogens or allergens in the air or in the food the animal ingests. Putting your canine on a restricted diet of dog food for allergies is a great way to pinpoint the cause of the dog food allergies.

First, take stock of your dog's overall health and well-being. The dog's symptoms could be much like those of a human diagnosed with an allergy, such as a runny nose or vomiting. Pay attention to the skin and other areas, such as around the eyes, ears, and nose. The anal area is another indicator of allergic reactions.

Is your dog rubbing or scratching at any of these areas enough to create a reddened appearance? Take note of how long your canine has been exhibiting these symptoms and what the dog ate in that time period as this may indicate dog food allergies. Switching to a homemade dog food recipe may help eliminate these reactions. You can locate dog food recipes for dogs with allergies online or you can ask your veterinarian for a homemade dog food recipe.

Finding a cure for your pet's allergic reactions is as simple as changing their diet. This dietary change should last for a period of two weeks so that you can monitor your dog's health during that time to see if the dog food allergies have subsided. This gives ample time for the dog to adjust to the new food and to heal from any allergic reactions he or she may have been having.

This two week period will be frustrating for the dog and the owner. This is because it will take time for the dog to get used to eating something new, and he or she may not eat for the first few days. It is very crucial, however, to not give anything in this time period except for the new food and water. This is a period of cleansing for your dog's body. Finding the right dog food for allergies is crucial to help your dog live a long full filling life free of health issues associated with allergies.

The symptoms should clear up on their own upon the introduction of the dog food for allergies. If not, it may be that your dog is suffering from something much more severe and may need a veterinary checkup to see what could be wrong.

If you are an allergy sufferer, you know how annoying the symptoms can be. Your dog feels the same when experiencing allergic reactions. Keeping your pet healthy is very important to his or her livelihood. Also, can you imagine not being able to eat your favorite food because it gave you an allergic reaction? Your dog has similar feelings but is unable to address these needs as you are able. Switching to a homemade dog food for allergies can greatly help your pet to feel more comfortable and it is just as, if not more so, nutritionally viable than regular store-bought food.

Each food has several different ingredients, so eliminating foods can help you to decipher what ingredients your dog is experiencing the allergic reaction from. Switching to a homemade dog food recipe will be able to halt your dog's allergies and give them a healthier life at the same time. If you have questions about dog food for allergies, consult with your veterinarian.

  • I am assuming you have taken the poor guy to your local Vet and if not you should to rule out other health conditions. If you don't plan on making your dog food (highly recommend) I have seen good result on dog allergies with California Natural limited ingredients you may have to try a few different kinds (lamb, chicken, etc.), to see if its one of the meats he is allergic too. You can also try Orijen be careful with this one as the protein level is high and may have a tough time absorbing.

  • Actually his paws were really bad when we rescued him. He als had ringworm on about 70% of his body. He is bathed in Miconazole 3x a wk and the paws cleared up and ringworm went away. But now he has lumps. And I mean EVERYWHERE. Only thing I can think of is the food. My dogs all eat Science Diet Healthy Mobility and have for yrs. But it won't hurt to switch to natural and give it a try. Do u make your own food? If not, what brand do you recommend?

  • @charwelch18 Thanks for the comment.

Our own dog was having reaction to one or more ingredients as his paws where breaking out...by removing a few ingredients we got to the bottom of his allergy and everything has been fine since. So definitely give a natural meal a try.

  • Thank you for this. I recently started fostering dogs for my local shelter and my new foster boy has been having HORRIBLE skin issues. Pea sized lumps all over his body and a rash on his belly. I'm going to try something all natural with no additives or preservatives and see if this helps. Thanks again.
