Upon returning home to no one, Ryan finds a note on the kitchen table from his mother. He has to do a task, but Ryan is apprehensive about going into the crawlspace.
Music: Kevin MacLeod
I loaned Chris, my cousin, a MiniDV camera, so he could produce his own short for practice and get a feel for how filmmaking is like at the basic level without many other tools such as professional lights. As I worked with him, I advised him on angles and choosing shots that would make good cinematography. He easily applied what I taught him about white balancing, how to control available lighting, the importance of manual controls, etc. When we were in the crawlspace, our legs were screaming to stand for blood circulation. As you can see in the short, it was tough walking or waddling, I should say.
Chris handled the music and was impressed to see how well I had done with placing it during the editing process. Same for the sound effects and the phone conversation. Only a few tweaks were applied in a short time and I was happy to see that I had greatly improved from The Supernatural Stalker in terms of sound and music editing.
We discussed that if we wanted great lighting, it is necessary to have professional lights or lights that would be appropriate for filmmaking. We also talked about how types of shots should be more varied such as close-ups to show facial expressions at certain times.
I had some difficulty with the aspect ratio when exporting it. As you might be able to discern, the video appears slightly squished in horizontally. Interestingly, I have not had this problem when I exported test footage from an AG-HMC40 camera that I purchased after this project.
In any case, please note that this "practice" video represents only the least of our abilities and efforts. In other words, we can produce much higher-quality narrative videos with a devoted approach to technical quality as well as storytelling quality. Of course, the first step towards this goal is developing stories and polishing them. We've already finished writing a major draft of our first feature-length screenplay with further refinement to follow.
