Verveer was born in Pottsville, Pa., in 1944. She earned her B.S. in languages at Georgetown in 1966 and returned to the university to study Russian and earn a Master's degree in 1969.

After graduating, she worked in government and in a slew of non-governmental organizations. She coordinated the Civil Rights and Urban Affairs for the U.S. Catholic Conferences national office, became field manager of Common Cause and worked in the U.S. Senate as legislative director and special assistant to Sen. George McGovern (D-S.D.).

In 1987, Verveer was named executive vice president of People for the American Way, a civil-rights and constitutional- liberties group. There, she led the organizations efforts to pass several civil-rights bills. She took a break from that position to help with Bill Clintons 1992 presidential campaign.
Verveer has been an advocate for womens issues for more than 20 years, both as a member of then-First Lady Clintons staff and as an activist. In 2000, she co-founded the Vital Voices Global Partnership, which trains women in the developing world to take on leadership roles in government and business. She support the womens rights, political and economic empowerment through initiatives and programs designed to increase womens and girls access to education and health care, to fight violence against women and girls in all forms, and to ensure that women's rights are fully integrated with human rights in the development of U.S. foreign policy.
She also fights against human trafficking and believes abortion rights.
