Milk Let Down
Milk let down is the term applied to the release of milk into the mother's breast ducts in response to the baby's suckling. At birth, milk is secreted into the breast alveoli. Suckling stimulates the passage of sensory impulses into the hypothalamus, which orders the posterior pituitary gland to release the hormone oxytocin into the bloodstream. Cells surrounding the outer walls of the alveoli are stimulated to contract, ejecting milk into the ducts. Thirty seconds after the baby begins to suck, milk flows into the reservoirs, or is let down. For a few days after birth the fluid produced is colostrum, which, although secreted in small quantities, is rich in protein and is well supplied with antibodies that protect the baby against infection. Milk begins to be secreted about three days after birth. The milk is almost twice as rich in fat and sugar as the colostrum and is a complete food for the baby during the first months.

@nambypamby34 as you must be well aware, modulation of DA is often a target of many anti-depressants. thus it maybe possible to say that antidepressant usage during breast feeding may result in a dec in milk let down

@nambypamby34 well there is a dec in dopamine that results from nipple innnervation of the hypothalamus during suckling. this dec in Dopamine actually allows for inc prolactin release and inc milk let down. prolonged breast feeding may have a slight impact on DA levels which may be the cause of the "sadness you experience."

@nambypamby34 I've heard of this condition and it looks like you have it very mild. It's definitely a hormonal issue. What a great mother your are though... breastmilk is the best thing you can do for your baby! :)
