  • love this version of bob dylans classic

  • @formaldehydekat I suppose that is true, it can be interpreted both ways. Now that I think about it, you might be right about this version being about a brothel. The first version of this song that I ever heard was be the Animals so when I heard this version I thought the lyrics were the same and didn't listen for changes until you brought that up. Thanks for the explanation :)

  • @95Gaara95 well those can be interpreted in both ways. i'm pretty sure there (was) an actual brothel called house of the rising sun

    "If I had listened

    To what my mother said

I'd have been at home today.

But I was young and foolish, oh God,

Let a rambler lead me astray."

this also alludes to a brothel

it is a folk song and there are slightly altered versions, and i think this one was tailored to represent a brothel, while other may represent a prison. it's a beautiful song either way though.

  • @formaldehydekat I don't think so because in part of the song she talks about "spending your life in sin and misery" and another part says Im going back to New Orleans to wear that ball and chain

  • @95Gaara95 i thought it was about a brothel

  • house of the rising sun is actually a song about a woman going to prison. very old blues song recorded by other artists where the original meaning has been lost.

  • i love marianne faithfull. thank you so much putting this where i can listen to this fantastic artist.
