...maybe ray will be god??!
-
The smoothness Thigpen switches from brushes to sticks in unbelievable. One of the most underrated drummers ever.
-
I spent two weeks in The Big Apple in the summer of '62, and sat three feet from Oscar every night as he gigged at the legendary Basin Street East jazz club with the late great Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums. I was close enough to hear Oscar's voice scat singing his own lines, and Ray Brown singing parallel lines to his solos as well.

Great performance but I can hardly hear Ray Brown.

@LMatters1 what are the guys communicating?
-
@oldtealady Tha's my opinion, too!
-
First Ed looks at Ray Brown trying to get him to follow the syncopation and then Oscar looks back at Ray. Ray keys in on Ed, Ed smiles briefly as if to say, "You got it now." Ray smiles now that the group is in unison. Crazy power going on here. Best trio ever.

is it me, or is it that the way they recorded video had more frames per second back then?
do you see that smoothness? for example at 3:52 when the drummer does his bang bang... looks so different.

Have a look at Oscar give a brief instruction to Ray at 1:50, Ray then repeats it to Ed and not one of them miss a single note! What wonderful talent, what wonderful music.
greatest piano player ever!
