It was a song born of a brief affair between two members of the Mamas & Papas, Denny Doherty and Michelle Phillips. Unfortunately Michelle was married to John Phillips another member of the group at the time. The messy situation ended up with Michelle being excluded from the group for a time, and therein lies the title to the song. During the recording session, Denny comes in too early during the last stanza, a mistake the producers left in thinking it added a special effect to the song. "I Saw Her Again (Last Night)" was one of the group's top singles peaking at #5 during the summer of 1966.

  • THIS NOT ORIGINAL

    NO ES ORIGINAL

  • @rememberold Yes, this is the original stereo version as played by mainstream US radio upon its release.

  • At 2:44 Denny sings "I saw her" early and then comes in a second later. Bones Howe indicates that was an error in the recording that they liked and kept.

  • @tomtowle And that is entirely correct. In fact, when Paul McCartney first heard the recording he caught the mistake and thought to himself (correctly) that no one is that clever to do that on purpose. For some strange reason the "mistake" is quite catchy.

  • Denny once said of the band, "It was over before it began."

Kind of like the affair with Michelle.

    But what an ending.

BTW, when John found out about Denny and Michelle - he made Denny sit down and write this song with him.

  • @LittleDragon2000 Thanks for the insight and info on this particular song...Nocaro

  • This is the original version. There was an edited version, for 45 single release, which removed the instrumental bridge at the middle of the song. This version was included on both the mono and stereo versions of the LP.
