In 1975, JC Penney hired 12 college students to ride their bikes from NYC to San Francisco. They were promoting their new disc brake equipped bikes OEM'd from Huffy Manufacturing. As you will see, they thought people rode bikes in tennis gear. The music is classic.

It was a great summer, even with the mandatory "Safety skits" performed at various JC Penney shopping malls.

  • Among several silly things about this cycling adventure is the fact that they rode across North America from east to west when the prevailing winds are from west to east. Notice how many scenes they are drafting. Considering the heavy bikes, lack of proper cycling gear and head winds this tour was a real accomplishment for everyone who finished.

  • @Salukicyclist you are absolutely right with one exception (which I'll get to). We started in NYC because that is where the corporate sponsor was. I was dreading the headwinds. I believe the bikes weighed in at 38 lbs! That disk brake, was incredibly heavy, and it wasn't very good at stopping the bike. We did bring real bike gear (circa 1975) from home. So I had my Kucherick chamois shorts and cleated bike shoes on when the camera wasn't rolling

  • As a bicycle tourist myself, it's fun to see you guys doing "safety skits" before the era of helmets! Also: bike touring is, indeed, a lot of fun, although I've only done the self-supported kind.

  • @aprilstarchild79 Very ironic that the focus of the ride was on safety - but no helmets. We survived. I will not go a block without a helmet these days...

  • cool kaleidoscope

  • @jonnyonetimeoner Kaleidoscopes were the app of the 70s. I think the director wanted to do a Grateful Dead movie, but was stuck with JCPenney!

  • These were the days before Armadillos, or other kevlar belted tires. Imagine how many flats they got!

  • @samhande I have to laugh. By coincidence, I used to work at JCPenney. I did not know this was a JCP supported ride until I saw the credits at the end. My jaw dropped. I understand the ride much more fully. But getting back to the prevailing winds ... you could always have ENDED the ride in NYC. lol. Anyway those were the seventies. It must have been quite an experience and props to you and to all the other riders that finished.

  • silly disk brakes only on the back?
