Christmas Eve (Suite)

I. Christmas Night
II. Ballet of the Stars
III. Witches' Sabbath and Ride on the Devil's Back
IV. Polonaise
V. Vakula and the Slippers

A thrilling orchestral suite by Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908), based on music from the 1895 opera of the same name. The plot of the opera follows the short story "Christmas Eve" from Nikolai Gogol's "Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka". The same story also formed the basis of Tchaikovsky's operas "Vakula the Smith" and "Cherevichki".

A synopsis of Gogol's short story is available on Wikipedia:

Conductor: Neeme Järvi
Scottish National Orchestra

  • Thank you for uploading! Very nice Christmas pictures from Dykanka ))) Would you tell where i can find this record?

  • @YasyaEagle You're welcome. This recording is from a terrific set of two CDs called "Rimsky-Korsakov: Overture and Suites from the Operas", which can be found on Amazon.com.

  • Qualcuno sa dirmi come si chiama l'ultimo quadro che appare nella suite? Quello con i bimbi morti nella neve? Grazie!!!

  • @valerio1951 The last picture is called "Kinder im Schnee" and it is by Richard Borrmeister. (Sorry, I can't speak Italian)

  • @YasyaEagle Thanks a lot for a link! I watched it for many-many times! Every Christmas sitting down at the TV and get enjoy since i remember of myself. This year won't be an exception also:) I watched it as all of us in a black-and-white version and only once in colors last year. But still prefer old b&w version much more, remembering me of my childhood.. Anyways Thanks a lot!
