New Voices (trailer)

Hiphop is the voice of young people all over the world, not only in Europe and the US. This is the trailer of the film New Voices, a project sponsored by the Dutch NGO Oxfam Novib. Filmmakers Bram Vergeer and Raymond Verhoef visited Kenya and Uganda and explored the role of hiphop for the (East) African youth. Many young people in Africa grow up in slums where the easiest way to make a living is crime. Hiphop offers an alternative for this life and provides a medium to express feelings and opinions. Problems like poverty, unemployment, corruption, AIDS and teenage pregnancy are daily issues in the life of young Africans and hiphop provides a platform to speak about thse topics in public. This is a short trailer of the full length film which will be show in Dutch theaters soon.

This film is made by Bram Vergeer from the Holland based InSideOut Foundation. It, together with many more films, can be seen on our website www.insideseries.com. Our aim is to present a different view on the daily life of people in countries all over the world, especially in countries which in our opinion are being portrayed in a limited way by the common media. We do this by making documentary films, developing a series of short films mend for the internet (the Inside Series) and stimulating filmmakers across the world. Hiphop is een muziekstijl die jeugd over de hele wereld aanspreekt. Het is een gereedschap om alledaagse problemen in jouw omgeving aan te kaarten. Vooral in Afrika fungeert hiphop als een stem voor jongeren waar normaal nauwelijks naar word geluisterd. Armoede, werkeloosheid en de AIDS-epidemie zijn slechts een deel van de onderwerpen die aan bod komen. Deze film brengt de kijker naar de twee Oost-Afrikaanse hoofdsteden Nairobi (Kenia) en Kampala (Oeganda) en maakt duidelijk dat hiphop een universeel medium is om je stem te laten horen.
