How to make fire with a knife. And a rock. Something as simple as a knife can mean the difference between life and death in a survival situation. This one is an Opinel. I like it because the blade has a high carbon content. Not only does this mean that it is easy to sharpen and takes a great edge, but also that it can be used to start a fire. I've tried a few other knives but this is the best so far. I'm not an expert in steel alloys (there are quite a few here on YouTube worth searching for) and I don't know the composition of the steel used, but I suspect it has a higher than usual carbon content. The blade rusts readily if not oiled, especially in a damp environment. If left in a sink full of dishes overnight (hey, it happens sometimes) it will basically change colour in the space of one night. But that is a small price to pay, in my opinion, for the benefits, being that it sharpens easily to a really good edge and that it can be used as a steel striker to start a fire.
Had a lot of fun getting into the character of the grumpy French guy for this video. Also realised I definitely don't want to develop a beer gut and then need to access a moonbag/fannypack. (I actually just used the bag for the camera. From a distance it was a close enough approximation.) The Edith Piaf impersonation was me. I thought it was pretty good, but then I have a delusional sense of belief in my own expertise at just about anything. I didn't introduce Beatnik Bob or Roberta because I figured that most people will have already watched the previous videos (it's a SERIES, after all) and it's a tight squeeze to combine the ingredients of comedy, science, survival topics and introduce new characters all the same video and still keep it down to about the four minute mark.
I put in a lot of hard work on this one. I hope you bastards appreciate it.

  • @antonopa1 You can find quartz and other sufficiently hard rocks in several places. Streams, rocky outcroppings, etc. will have them. Or, if you live in the city like me, you can go to a park or other gravel-paved place - the walkways will probably have quartz or other. That's where I got mine for this very purpose! Good luck.
