Red Panda
Scientific name:
Situation: endangered due to habitat loss and hunting.
Jerusalem zoo: 1 male "Simon"
The Red panda's natural habitat are the forested areas in the Himalaya Mountains. Its position in the animal kingdom is unclear. Currently it is considered a bear, although it looks like a raccoon, but others consider the pandas to be a completely independent group. They eat mostly bamboo (a red panda female can eat up to 200,000 bamboo leaves in one day!), but also other plants, birds eggs, insects and small vertebrates.
Red pandas are solitary animals.
It's not a bear or a raccoon - it's a living fossil living in an entirely distinct family - the ailuridae.
