2008.01.30 - By Lindsey Hilsum:
"Hundreds of thousands of migrant workers across China have been left trapped by some of the worst weather for half a century.
Stranded by snow and freezing ice Chinese workers have been unable to get home to their families.
Now they've been told to cancel plans to go home for their new year break.
At least 55 people have died in the freezing conditions. Power lines are cut, and roads and railways are blocked.
Police said almost 6,500 vehicles were stuck on one stretch of highway alone. "

yes I m originally from Heilongjiang province.
The temperature at Harbin goes down to minus 30 sometimes even 35 but the North East is very prepared for snow weather.

Yes you are correct it is the middle south of china that has this problem for the first time, they are used to mild weather around that time of year. when i was in the north east of china they had really heavy snow last year, but because they were used to snow they knew to clear roads and wear warm clothes, after a day or two everything was back to normal.

Check the lattitude of the snowing parts of China: it is around 25-30 N, about the same as Egypt or Mexico. Usually there was no such big one...

Uncivilized like them, how can they know how to prepare? Red China sow the wind and reap the whirlwind. That's the name of the game.

The Chinese are simply unprepared. Switzerland clear the roads the same day the snow falls but they are prepared. Same with Canada. China is too crowded but then Japan also is and they seem well organised. Much of China is still poor despite all the growth and they are still trying to build enough infrastructure to cope with demand.
