China - 7 - Beijing by bike - EN - 7/12/06

Here's myself and a guy I met, Doug, taking our lives in our hands and cycling round Beijing for the day. Or rather putting our lives in the hands of all those loony drivers. They really are awful! No lane discipline, no anticipation, no consideration whatsoever for any other road users. It's always 'me first and get out my way'. Having said that, it was good fun actually, and not THAT dangerous as long as you stay alert. What amazed me was how the Chinese pedestrians and cyclists DIDN'T check before coming out of a junction or wandering into the middle of the road. Mad! The cycle lanes are everywhere though and very wide, but are also used by pedestrians, scooters, tricycles with huge load bays, taxis and of course, all of the above coming at you head on from time to time.
