We started signing with her when she was 6 months old. At 7 months, she signed her first sign back to us: fish. She really liked feeding the fish!

By 12 moths she used 18 signs. By 18 months, she used 65. At that point, she started speaking more than signing, but for that year from 8 to 18 months, sign language was so valuable to us. She could ask to go for a walk, have a snack, take a nap, be read to, or point out objects she saw that she was excited to show us.

It's easy to teach your baby sign and I highly recommend it. Find the signs online with an online sign dictionary, then start using them and be consistent. Pick one or two to start, or pick many more.

This video was taken when she was 14 months old.

  • You have a truly amazing child. She is so very smart. I wish my children knew what she knows at her age. I have a 17 mo. old daughter and this video make me want to teach her and soon. Thank You for the video. Beautiful Family!

  • Thank you! It is never too late to learn. My 4 year old is still learning and using signs to communicate with her sister, and to play games with me (the "I can communicate without talking" game). It's a lot of fun, and less work than you might think!

  • that really sweet and amazing

  • That is really neat. So how did you teach them? Did you have some kind of guide or did you just teach them random signs you know. I know ASL, but I was wondering if you have some kind of method to teaching her.

  • that is adorable! very smart little one =)

  • aww its so cute how shes only 1 year and 2 months and is so smart !!! she is so cuteeee

  • Kids have such an amazing capacity for knowledge and this little cutie more than proves that! My son is 3 years old and has ASD,we've just been advised to start using sign with him, he only knows a couple of signs but it's so exciting to finally get a glimpse of what he's thinking! Beautiful video, hope you're well :)

  • Cute :D

  • I just posted a video response. My daughter Misty has nowhere near as many signs as Kira (very impressive!) but she does have a dozen or so. :)

  • Wonderful. I love signing with babies, as it reveals just how smart they are!
