Nico Carstens plays Zambezi (alt. spellings: Zambesi, Sambesi, Sambesie)-- a tune he composed with his long-time co-worker, Anton de Waal, and the pair's most famous composition. (In 1955 Bob Hilliard, the American lyricist, would add English lyrics to the tune). The song became a world hit and was recorded by numerous artists, including Eddie Calvert, Acker Bilk, Bert Kaempfert, The Shadows, James Last, Chet Atkins, Floyd Kramer and Johnny Dankworth.

Since forming his own band at age 24, Carstens has recorded over 90 albums which have sold over 2 million copies in South Africa. He has performed all over Southern Africa.
Anton de Waal was the pseudonym of George Charles Gunn (1917-1974), ostensibly to generate a greater acceptance amongst the Afrikaners - many of whom still held a grudge towards the English speaking population of South Africa after their long dissatisfaction with British rule.
