Despite the fact they were under the care of a friend they stopped visiting because the conditions became bearable for them. My suggestion is if mamma cat is going to have babies put mamma and her litter outside and give them a box to sleep in, and then handle them on occasion when they get big enough. Fuck having kittens under one month old or large quntities of them in the house.

No way, when my momma cat had kittens they pissed and crapped everywhere, tore the furniture to shreds, vomited/urinated on any cloth opr paper surface ruining half my clothes, and most of my tax documents, and any thing cardboard was disintagrated. She had them right before I deployed and they were not able to be tamed, socialized, house broken, and adopted in time before I left so they pretty much had free reign of the house.
