Simple penetration and expansion test of the Federal Hydra-Shok .45 ACP 230 grain hollowpoint, using a diluted form of SIM-TEST Ballistic Testing Media. This format is comparable to ballistic gel, and includes four layers of denim. Video includes brief overview of the cartridge, recoil shots, and one shot test. Post-shot evaluation shows bullet path through the block, average diameter, retained weight and close-ups of the test bullet. Test gun was a Colt Series 80 with 5" barrel. Advertised muzzle velocity is 900 fps, my 5-shot average was 885 fps. Test shot is from 10 feet. BB calibration, approx. 600 fps, was 3.70", average of 5 shots.

VERY IMPORTANT INFO REGARDING AMMO TESTS ON THIS CHANNEL:

Early on, I used wetpack for ammo testing, with or without denim. Beginning in 2011 I use SIM-TEST calibrated to ballistic gel specs plus 4 layers of denim. The denim is an IWBA standard simulating the density of heavy clothing. Please understand that these techniques are merely representations to indicate possible ballistics; they are not intended to replicate real-world street results. Even by adding bone, additional clothing, etc., there are just too many factors involved in a self-defense scenario to offer a 100% degree of accuracy when compared to street results. It is essential to perform exhaustive research on your carry choice, which could yield actual use data. The law-abiding citizen bears ultimate responsibility for their ammunition choice and insuring reliability in their handgun.

  • "Way before Al Gore invented the internet & global warming"....LMAO that earned my subscription.

  • I would stick with this round only in calibers above 9mm. There was a shooting where a guy was struck twice in the chest wiith 9mm hydroshock and both failed to expand, he did not go down.

  • 45 ACP my favorite pistol round

not too big, not too small

    juuuust right

  • @mattc1683 what i usually see, is that its very soft, bb penetration is 6 inches, i use gel at 2.5 inch penetration with bb's, with 1 inches of ice to simulate a breastplate.

  • @pac6010 I didnt say its weak, by no means are any rounds weak. from .380 to .45 as long as you have a good hollowpoint like a speer gold dot or any other reliable round and you place your rounds on a vital area the enemy will die. but the fact that its a .45 makes no diffrence at all in how fast they will die. the argument about caliber with modern ammo is pointless and stupid. they all kill just as fast. EVERY caliber has killed someone effectivly

  • @mattc1683 Ya I mean to say is a man with three .45 rounds in him center mass isn't going to live. I wasn't really counting on stopping power before an animal or human reach's you. That's something different entirely in which I have to differ to you if you have said real world experiences with it. But a .45 will kill a person in time, its by no means a weak round.

  • Yes

  • @gunman848 not if you calibrate it correctly.

  • @pac6010 actually .45 will not take any human down. I have seen several times a man getting hit with a .45 and not going down even after 3 shots hit center mass in Iraq. It depends on the person and the quality of the round as well as thousends of other factors. with modern bullitt technology there realy is no diffrence between 9mm and .45 in a good quality hollow point. Before hollow points is when .45 was better. now days its ALL about shot placement, nothing more.

  • @Chinunit22 no its not...not even close. the recoil you feel in your hand from the pistol is the same impact the person getting shot will feel. It is simple physics, for every action there is an equal and oposit reaction nothing more nothing less.
